They do look like synonyms. It might be worth emailing POWO for clarification (bi@kew.org)?
Sphenostylis marginata subsp. erecta is considered a synonym of S. erecta subsp erecta according to Verdcourt & Doygaard in Flora Zambesiaca volume 3-5: 68(2001)
S. marginata subsp. obtusifolia is a synonym of S. erecta subsp. obtusifolia.
FZ still does have S. marginata E. Mey. as an accepted name for a species occuring in southern Mozambique, Swaziland and KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. It cites Vigna marginata (E. Mey.) Benth. and Harv. as a synonym.
Another taxon that was previously mistaken under the name S. marginata is Sphenostylis zimbabweensis Mithen, which is considered a near-endemic in the border Highlands of Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
All these species names are present in POWO except for the subtaxa of S. erecta (erecta and obtusifoila) which apparently are no longer recognized.
To me it seems that POWO is still correct and can be followed.
Thanks @bartwursten
I've created Sphenostylis erecta https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/1393366-Sphenostylis-erecta and drafted a swap from this to that https://inaturalist.ala.org.au/taxon_changes/110972
I think that's right, but S. marginata subsp. obtusifolia is confusing me so I won't commit the swap right now, although we don't have that as a taxon anyway
POWO now accepts Sphenostylis erecta subsp. obtusifolia and Sphenostylis erecta subsp. erecta. Do you folks wish to mirror those subspecies in the iNaturalist taxonomy now?

There is no subspecies of Sphenostylis marginata in POWO, and there is another species called Sphenostylis erecta (Baker f.) Hutch. ex Baker f. (https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:519225-1), which is not here on iNat. Not sure if they are synonyms or if it is necessary to create a new taxon.
