What

White Root (Lobelia purpurascens)

Date

March 2, 2020

Description

There is a little patch of these plants growing under eucalyptus and wattle trees, just to the northeast of the Chermside Historic Precinct. I photographed them today 2nd March 2020. They do not grow in many parts of 7th Brigade Park. There is quite a lot of 'mile-a-minute' weed vine growing in the same area; I spent some time removing at least some of that, to give the native plants room to breathe. Update, March 2023: so far as I can tell, no longer present in this location: the area was doused with herbicide. The mile-a-minute survived and bounced back; the lobelia has... disappeared. I suspect that Council's contractors do not necessarily recognise this plant as a legitimate native groundcover but instead view it as a noxious weed.
