Description

The Black-bellied Hummingbird is endemic to Costa Rica and western Panama. I had never seen this species before, so this one was a lot of fun. At this location if you watch the hummer feeders there are loads of Magnificent Hummers, Violet Sabrewings, Purple-throated Mountain-gems, and Green-crowned Brilliants. We never saw the small Black-bellied Hummer visit a feeder, but we would occasionally glimpse one working through some flowers on the grounds of the lodge. I spent an hour or so following one around a only getting a few marginal shots. It seems to never perch, but finally I guess it needed a rest and took a perch. I stood there for 15 minutes as it remained in one spot, then it stretched its wings giving me a few nice shots, then it was off again. Image 4 shows the bird's tongue sticking out. The last image posted will show the bird in its wing stretch.
