What

Polyphemus Moth (Antheraea polyphemus)

Description

The moth was hanging upside down on a branch of a Tuscan rosemary plant in our front garden. It's feathery antenna and eye spots are visible in one of the pictures I've uploaded. It was about 3 inches long from its antenna to the tip of its folded wing. I didn't catch it opening it's wings but based on its markings and size I' think it is a Polyphemus moth
