What

Pelagic Gooseneck Barnacle (Lepas anatifera)

Observer

gcwarbler

Date

August 7, 2015

Description

Small individuals of this barnacle had begun to colonize a tree trunk which had presumably floated down the Rio Grande, out into the ocean, then washed ashore north of town. The present barnacle is probably about 15-20mm long. Minute Balanus-type barnacles (probably about 1mm across) can also be seen on the wood.
