Description

Zostera in Mlalazi Estuary

Beds of the submerged macrophyte, Zostera capensis were recorded in the Mlalazi Estuary by Ward in Feb and August 1962 by Hill in 1966 (Herbarium specimens). There have been no records since then. This observation shows that it still occurs in the estuary. Where it is growing is still unknown - these specimens are from segments washed up on the shoreline.

Found washed up on the shore after a particularly windy period. Also after a prolonged period of salinity close to that of sea water.
15 Nov. I have now found it growing about 1.8 km in from the mouth - and added a photo. It is growing where it is partially protected by an intertidal sand-bank. Total area is about 0.1 of a hectare.
