Ukrainian Brook Lamprey

Eudontomyzon mariae

Description 2

The body length of the Ukrainian lamprey is 14-20 cm, weight is up to 17 g. Females are usually somewhat thicker and more massive than males. The color of the body is gray, the belly is lighter.

The larval period lasts 5-6 years, the metamorphosis takes about 4-5 weeks, the adult lamprey lives about a year. During metamorphosis in the throat, a mirror cord is formed, which closes the passage into the esophagus, and the intestine is significantly atrophied. In the adult state, the lamprey does not feed. In most rivers spawning takes place in April-May. The male builds a nest (deepening in the ground), the eggs are swept out and immediately fertilized. Soon after spawning, the producers die.
