Shape: Multi-stemmed shrub
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: elongated cluster – catkin, ½-2 ¼ inches long, male and female on different plants
Leaves: pointed oval, 1 ½-3 inches long, 1 inch wide, 2-5 times longer than wide, shallow rounded teeth
Bark: smooth-rough, grey
Fruit/Seed: cluster of pear-cone shaped capsules, densely covered in short hairs
Height: 4-14 feet
Flowering: May
Habitat: swamps, fens, sedge, meadows, peatlands
Other: State Special Concern status
