Day 3 Peninsula BioBlitz

Hi Team,

WOW!!!!! We have already surpassed last year's observation count (1,007) and are at 1,077!! We have also surpassed last year's 254 species and are already at 263 (a number that keeps rising as more identifications are made and seems to be rapidly rising as I am typing)! And, as far as I can see, we have observations in all of the Preserves and all of the accessible Reserves!

Things are getting close in the race for the most observations, Cynthia and Abbie are no...

Sunday wrap-up, and some thank yous as we enter the final stretch!

We hope everyone had a great weekend of exploring and documenting our local wildlife! @Hexagonaria and I headed up to McLean Game Refuge in Granby today to add some more observations in the northernmost part of Hartford County, it was our first time visiting that location and it was really beautiful. Can't wait to go back, we didn't make it all that far because we were taking so many pictures!

As of 11:00 PM we are at 661 species - we are catching up to some of t...

Day Three, Part Three: 1200 Species!

Couldn't resist. When I finished that last post, I had to check the numbers. We're at 1,202 species and counting!

The crow and the bobtail

On 28 April 2024, at about 14h00, I encountered an individual of Tiliqua rugosa (https://animaldiversity.org/accounts/Tiliqua_rugosa/) by the side of the road in Karrakatta Cemetery (https://www.mcb.wa.gov.au/our-cemeteries/karrakatta-cemetery/) in the Perth Metropolitan area.

Day Three, Part Two: Increasing the Value of Your iNat Observations Using Projects

Much of the fun of iNaturalist is contributing to projects, such as the City Nature Challenge, but there are hundreds of other projects out there to which you can contribute, and you probably already are without knowing it. Entering observations gives implicit permission for "umbrella" projects, like the City Nature Challenge, to harvest those observations. (That was in the fine print you didn't read when you joined iNat.)
Umbrella projects are the most common types of projects an...

CNC:NYC Day 3 - Already ahead of last year!

It's almost the end of day 3 and we're over 2000 observations ahead of our 2023 total! We also currently have the top species count of any of our previous NYC CNCs. The weather today was great and we're looking at another good one tomorrow. Let's finish strong, NYC!

One More Day for Observations

There's still one more day to participate in the #CityNatureChallenge. As of 9 p.m. on April 28, we have 82 participants with nearly 1,350 observations of plants and animals in our region 👏 We're still doing a great job in the state-wide competition, safely ahead of Frankfort and Lexington. Our naturalists in the SOKY community were so ready for the City Nature Challenge! Let's finish strong! Make as many observations as you can tomorrow, April 29.
📣Heads up - after this observation ...

Day Three: Not a Complete Washout

The thunder is rumbling outside as I write this journal entry. What was supposed to be a complete washout turned out not to be so bad. I spoke by text early on with Mark McDermott at the Big Sit, who described it as "slow." The rain chances kept going down and pushing back, so I headed out to see what I could do. I went back to Madison County, where I found my Little Blue Herons in the very same tree I left them on Friday and got photos for the Challenge! I picked up a few other thi...

The best CNC weekend!

What a joy it has been to see all of these observations come in all weekend long! We have already exceeded last years numbers across the board and we still have more than a whole day left! We are SO close to our goals, (and not to jinx anything) I am really confident we are going to meet or beat them!

As a self admitted bird nerd- some of the bird observations have been incredible! Red-headed Woodpeckers, Blue Grosbeaks, and Northern Parulas- truly spectacular.

Cedarwood Trail

Very glad to have encountered so many native species. There is at times a tell that a species is introduced—a certain disharmony... Uvularia sessilifolia and Symplocarpus foetidus, on the other hand, are as if the glory of this place discovered and discreetly unveiled...

I also saw one or two red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus). For some days now I have been hearing their song, which I am well acquainted with (given I bought a plush of this bird with a playable recording ...

One more day and a bit to capture your observations!

Hope everyone has been having fun this weekend! We were off to a slow start with the not so nice weather Friday-Saturday, but today and tomorrow are much more welcoming, so we're looking forward to further observations getting added for the coming week. We'll have a bunch of visual and audio uploads from Latimer Park, Keery Park and several local parks in west Cloverdale to add for the City of Surrey's account in the next few days so stay tuned.

Dark morph/black squirrels

I have gotten very fond of the dark-furred eastern gray squirrels, as one might guess from my profile picture. I get to see them on a regular basis where I currently live, but I will be relocating very soon to the Southern Tier area of NY state and of all the things I am worried about missing, the black squirrels are very high on the list.
I have tried noodling around on the internet to try to see if there are any near where I will be living and exploring. I found an iNat project ca...

A Guide to the Desert Stink Beetles of the United States, Canada, and Baja California

For many months now I have had the idea to write a guide for the tribe Amphidorini, where I could cover every species known and provide information to identify them. Last month I finally decided that I would commit to writing it and I have gotten a decent amount of progress since then, though I am still on Blapylis. Despite the title, I will also include information for those species from Mainland Mexico and Guatemala, they just have so little information that I do not realty think they ...

My Third Hike - Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park

For my third hike I went to Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park in Oakland. I ended up trekking along the Graham and West Ridge Trail. It was a sunny day with light winds and zero clouds in the sky. It was fairly cool although I felt a bit too warm underneath my jacket. I didn't see much wildlife other than the occasional squirrel and some corvids squawking hear and there. There where quite a lot of people hiking along the trails and many of them had brought dogs. Some of which either didn't...

Many thanks to all who have participated and it is not too late to join in the project!

The FOCCC BioBlitz project will be open through Monday April 29th to allow everyone to upload their observations to ...

Update Friday morning

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the 2024 Friends of Cave Creek Canyon BioBlitz thus far! I am heading to the canyon shortly to document more species but first wanted to share this quick update:

The BioBlitz got off to a wild and windy start on Thursday, April 25th. Seventeen 7th grade students from Center for Academic Excellence (Douglas) braved the high winds and arrived at the Visitor Information Center (VIC) at 10:00 a.m. They spent the next five hours exploring...

One more day of exploring Krakow biodiversity

Dear friends,

Another day of our wonderful challenge. We have a sunny day and I hope you have a nice time outside (with a few new observations of course).

There is still one day tomorrow to make observations and a few days to upload/identify them. Therefore, If you still have the strength and time to do some photos, it would be perfect. Compared to other cities, Krakow is in the upper half of the leaderboard with the neighbors Bratislava and České Budějovice.
