Physalis is a New World genus, with a center of diversity in Mexico, but some species are widely cultivated for their fruit, and others have traveled with us as weeds. Now, at least a few species can be found worldwide, particularly in areas with relatively warm climates.
With about 100 species, Physalis is one of the largest genera in the Solanaceae, and identification can be difficult. My specialty is Physalis of the southeastern US (we have about 30, including a few that occur around the world as weeds), but I am trying to learn the species that have left the New World and headed out into new territory.
This project is where I'm putting interesting Physalis observations from Africa while I try to learn to identify them.
