The purpose of this project is to record the occurrence and location of macroalgal blooms throughout Europe. Macroalgal blooms could provide a sustainable source of raw material for the food packaging industry. We are currently developing a prototype for a macroalgae-based biodegradable and (hopefully) edible food packaging for "to-go" food. By developing this prototype, we hope to provide a sustainable solution for reducing plastic packaging waste and simultaneously reducing the environmental impact of macroalgal blooms.

In this case, we define a macroalgal bloom as a case where greater than 15% of the available intertidal area is covered by a single species. less ↑
