CNC progress and targets

Hello everyone, it looks like you’ve compiled a nice total so far, we’re at 3,143 observations. Regrettably, I’ve had to be away this year so couldn’t contribute. However, I’ve been doing some identifications when I could. Last year we hit a 70% research grade level, which was pretty good. As far as I could tell, we won the CNC in that measurement (but there’s no recognition for that in the CNC)! We have a ways to go to meet that again, so it’s worth going through the identify model...

Day Six: The Progress Continues

The observations continue to trickle in and the identifications continue to arrive. We added nearly 100 observations today. Laura Sare bumped me from the top spot with 440 observations. Again, I'm happy to cede top spot, particularly to such a worthy "opponent." Our species count is currently at 1,418, just a few over last night's 1,409. That number is going to vary, probably staying in that neighborhood, as IDs are refined and changed over the next few days. Yesterday's post shoul...

Subspecific range map for Common Side-blotched Lizards

I have updated the range map for Uta stansburiana and the five continental subspecies based on some recent work in the field the past couple years. The map can be found as this observation. Some areas of these distributions are still poorly understood, such as much of the non-Baja distribution in Mexico (especially at the subspecific level) and where U.s.elegans, U.s.nevadensis, and ...

And the numbers are climbing!

A shout out to everyone taking the time to upload observations and especially all you dedicated folks helping with the IDs!

By the way, if you're checking in on the Metro Vancouver Regional project and how we're doing nationally, Metro is neck and neck with Montreal (12,884 to 12,900 respectively)! And we're well ahead of Calgary Metro Region and the GTA.

State of the Syrphs - 1-May-2024

We have lift-off! (bzzzz.....)

It's been quite a month on the hoverfly front. Last month I predicted we might get 2,500-3,000 new uploads in April (the previous record for April being 1,824). We actually had nearly 3,800! Only July and August last year have ever had more. Nearly 1,200 of these were observed during the four days of the City Nature Challenge (CNC). The identification window for the CNC ends on Sunday. More comments on that below.

I'm not going to pre...

Our numbers keep climbing!

Hi everyone,

Hope you've had a great City Nature Challenge so far! Although the observation period ended on Monday, many users are still uploading photos and audio captured during the observation period of the CNC. This means our numbers are still going up! We have the potential to pass several cities above us as more identifications and observations are added. If you have expertise identifying organisms in South Florida, whether you specialize in bird ID, botany, fish, or someth...

Madagascar Tour, Aug. 28 - Sept. 28, 2023

We returned to Madagascar to search for weird and wonderful creatures that make this island nation home. We visited Lemurs’ Park near the capital city of Antananarivo for an introduction to a few of the lemur species found here. The first stop on our tour was Kirindy Mitea National park along the Mozambique Channel in southwest Madagascar. Within the park is the largest deciduous forest and home to 8 species of lemur and the island’s largest predator, the Fossa.

A 10-hour drive...

Species of the Day - Days 2 & 3

The terrestrial week of our bioblitz is now over, but it was a huge success with over 1000 species (and counting) recorded on iNaturalist!

Our second Quadra Island Bioblitz species of the day winner was a lichen that at first (non-microscopic) glance, looks like nothing more than some black dots on a barnacle. Not to be confused with a barnacle lichen (a lichen that looks a lot like a barnacle), this lichen on a barnacle was found in the intertidal zone on one of Quadra Island's ...

Please share your appreciation!

We are floored by the participation by the San Diego County community in this year's City Nature Challenge!

We have flown past our goals of having at least 25,000 observations (we have an astonishing 5,000 more than last year!) and 2,500 species!

We have no doubt that our busy identifiers are going to help us get to at least 75% Research Grade on our observations, too.

And speaking of our busy identifiers, you may have noticed that some of our superstar observers ...

Majavan kuolema

Toisella on olalla kiväär...
