Objectives of the project

Peacock is a charismatic bird native to Indian subcontinent. It pops up in practically every check-list of avi-fauna from various regions of India. However, most of the information about the bird's natural history, behaviors, ecology and its interactions with humans is anecdotal.
Although peafowl is found all over Indian subcontinent and is listed as species of least concern by IUCN, a formal population survey has not been carried out since early 1990's. Geographic distribution of many species is changing due to severe deforestation, habitat degradation, change in land use, climate change and many other ecological and environmental factors in recent years and peafowl is no exception. However, there has been no formal effort to document any changes in its population numbers or geographic distribution.

Purpose: 1. To estimate the geographic distribution of Peacocks in India and elsewhere. 2. To study how often they come in contact with people and how close they are to human habitation.
