Cheetahs and African Wild Dogs are linked by their very extensive need for space, meaning they cannot be easily conserved within the confines of protected areas alone. Exactly where they do continue to exist must be established if we are to plan land use strategies for their conservation. While these species continue to lose ground to human expansion, your sightings can help to identify the remaining key areas.
This Cheetah and Wild Dog Spotting Project on iNaturalist has been funded through the generosity of National Geographic Big Cats Initiative; it is managed by the Range Wide Conservation Program (RWCP) for Cheetah and African Wild Dogs which is a joint project of both the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Zoological Society of London. The range wide program was initiated in 2007 and works with numerous African governments with the aim of unifying the approach to the conservation of these two iconic carnivores. Under this program, three regional conservation strategies and 14 National Conservation Action Plans have devised and endorsed; the program works with a broad variety of stakeholders to implement those plans.
