What

Frank's Sphinx Moth Sphinx frankii

Date

July 1, 2014

Description

Exciting observation and news from Brent Stuery, Natural Resources Program Manager, George Washington Memorial Parkway:

On July 1, 2014, this image of Franck's Sphinx was taken on the front of the Natural Resource Management building at Turkey Run Park Headquarters. The moths are attracted overnight to lights on the building.

It represents the 782ed moth species documented from GWMP and the 858th lepidopteran species.

It is a state listed rare species, designated "S2S3". The designation refers to the rangewide rarity of a species within both its entire known range (global rank) and within only its Virginia range (state rank). For both categories: 1 = critically imperiled, 2 = imperiled,
3 = vulnerable, 4 = common, and 5 = very common.) That means that Frank's Sphinx Moth is a species that is globally imperiled, and in Viiginia it is a vulnerable species.

Wicked exciting find for a casual stroll into the office!
