I don't know my shearwaters either, but it seems like all the ones around here are in the genus Puffinus. Stupid taxonomists and their confusing names... My bird guide (Sibley) says that the Sooty Shearwater is a "common visitor" that often "forms flocks of hundreds of thousands," so that could be a candidate.
